Hello fellow phillumenists!
With summer just around the corner, the East Coast is waking up in full bloom—and so is our urge to explore, collect, and bask in the seasonal magic. Longer days mean more time for sun-drenched strolls, breezy dinners, and of course, the thrill of the hunt for new matchbooks in beautiful places.
For May, we’re turning our gaze to New England, with a focus on Boston, Cape Cod, and the dreamy sister islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket—American classic summer escapes famously loved by the Kennedys. From Cape Cod’s wind-kissed shores to the islands’ inviting harbors, these spots have long been a backdrop for timeless Americana style, from JFK Jr.’s effortless cool to Carolyn Bessette’s iconic minimalist elegance. Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, these destinations offer plenty of character, warmth, and perfect places for mini-getaways—and, of course, memorable matchbook discoveries.
This list just came fresh off the press—my mom and I recently got back from a family trip to Boston and Martha’s Vineyard to celebrate my brother’s graduation. We brought back not only special memories but also some great matchbook finds we can’t wait to share with you all!
In Boston, start your day on Newbury Street. Pop into Candlefish—they sell candles and matchbooks (instant win). Then browse Catbird and Buck Mason for other cool matchbook finds. Dinner? Head to Pammy’s near Central Square for a cozy, elegant vibe and pasta that’s as memorable as their matchbook. For a nightcap, head to Contessa—its glamorous rooftop setting and signature matchboxes make for a perfect end to the night.
On Martha’s Vineyard, we loved our stay at Faraway Hotel—and immediately grabbed their gorgeous matchbooks, which the hotel concierge keeps in plain sight for guests. Although the Pelican Club restaurant inside the hotel was still closed when we visited in early May, their branded matchbooks are definitely worth hunting for now that the season kicked off last weekend!
As for Nantucket and Cape Cod, we’ll leave you with some solid matchbook leads to explore in first person below—because part of the fun is the thrill of the hunt. Whether you’re strolling into a breezy oyster bar, checking in at a classic inn, or ordering a drink at a tucked-away local favorite, keep your eyes peeled. Some of the best matchbooks show up when you least expect them—and always make the moment that much more memorable.
Like usual, we’d love to hear from you! Whether you live in New England or recently visited, let us know if you spotted any matchbooks we should add to the list. Your tips keep this guide fresh and the phillumenist community glowing.
Wishing you sea breezes, sunshine, and your next perfect match!
